BODY DISTORTION

The human body is fascinating and unpredictable, fragile yet durable. It may be contradicting but the creation brings us wonders that God made us, indeed, His masterpiece.

This series of black and white fine art self-portraits is an exploration of an elegant abstraction of the human anatomy. Entangled our reality and perception of appreciation at bodies that bring our senses into a different dimension interpreting hands, and limbs into another form of art, like a sculpture.

I started this project because I took Self as Subject course in Academy of Art University. This class is a directed study for my final thesis (Our Childhood Fears) after my midpoint review (My Childhood Fears). I want to focus on my thesis but I used this class to totally create different work and to divert my creative process by discovering myself more and created a signature process, lighting setup, and artistic style.

ACT I
PEDESTAL

My first attempt to do a nude self-portrait. I confess that some of my colleagues shoot me naked as their subject for their projects. But doing it by yourself is quite strange. I photographed myself as an object and not to become subjective for myself so I represent myself as a sculpture instead. The elegant representation, let say, of the Greek gods and mythological creatures that emulate perfection. Meticulous details and the erratic poses that create a powerful impact.

ACT II
EQUIVOCAL

Abstraction is something where you eliminate the norms to disorient your subject so I need to go closer to my focus. I try to cut those joints or where body parts start so I can tangle it with something not supposed to be, as long as, I can bend or flex those parts. It is a simple admiration, delicate aspiration and subtle storytelling to appreciate human anatomy.

ACT III
FACADE

This set of images is the conglomeration of the first two acts but are made on location. Actually, this is considered an assignment but I went to Germany at this time and had a great access to an amazing basement that I am free to take photos of while being naked. I just put myself in the most uncomfortable places, corners, and even shelves but I need to endure the cold air/weather during the fall-winter season and I also shot in Orange County and in San Francisco.

Two images in this series were selected in Academy of Art University Spring Show 2017 for the Photographer Department. I am honored that one of my images was awarded the Best of Show for single images. I will have my first solo exhibition showing Body Distorted on February 28, 2018 to March 30, 2018 in 688 Sutter Gallery, San Francisco, California, USA.
My sincerest appreciation for my professor, Connie Begg for believing in me, pushing me to open up, and unleashing my potentials as a fine art photographer. My thank you also to my ever supportive partner, Adriano Ciarrettino for assisting me in shooting this project even I am demanding. To all my families, relatives, and friends who donated on my GoFundMe campaign to make my show happen. Credits and photos will be posted after the event.
